Saint Dominic Elementary School’s 6th grade emphasizes preparing students academically and socially for the junior high class structure in 7th and 8th grades. Sixth graders master “good student” skills, such as how to study and take notes. SAT preparation starts this year as well, with the development of strong English and mathematics skills underscored.

Language arts class focuses on introducing students to a variety of literature and poetry, increasing critical reading and listening skills and writing outlines, letters, reports, verse and creative prose. In math students concentrate on ensuring a firm understanding of fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, improper fractions, ratios and percentages, as well as calculating volume, using a protractor and spreadsheets and constructing a variety of graphs.

Social studies class examines Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Modern European and Middle Eastern countries, with an emphasis placed on geography, government and economics. In science, students focus on the physical sciences, looking at electricity, magnetism, meteorology and energy. Students are introduced to both indoor and outdoor lab experiences and learn to use equipment safely.

Religious studies focuses on Bible history, both the Old and New Testaments, the stories of Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, and Noah as well as moral lessons from the New Testament.
