Physical education is taught to students in kindergarten through eighth grade twice weekly and it follows New York state standards. Students participate in activities that are designed to help them understand what fitness is and to value its contributions to a healthy lifestyle. Physical education class emphasizes activity-based fitness through team sports rather than through formal exercises/calisthenics. The program presents fitness as a positive experience in which students feel socially and emotionally comfortable and are able to overcome challenges on a personal level. The goal is for students to feel the joy of participation in health-enhancing activity, which will lead to a lifetime of fitness.
From Thanksgiving to Christmas, the curriculum focuses on developing students’ fitness to meet guidelines set by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. This approach offers opportunities for students to receive the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, which honors those students who demonstrate an outstanding level of fitness by scoring above the 85th percentile on its fitness tests.
For kindergarten through grade three, the activities focus on increasing coordination, with hopping, skipping, throwing a ball, climbing through cargo nets, spider web tag games and rudimentary circus training, including juggling and walking on stilts. Fourth through eighth graders learn to play a number of sports, including soccor, basketball, lacrosse, hockey, football (boys and girls), team handball, baseball and more.
