Saint Dominic Elementary School provides students with an extensive library, with more than 20,000 books, 25 databases, 20 magazines, 350+ videos for teachers, 12 computers, 8 laptops, a scanner and a SMARTBoard. Supplementary to their once-a-week library/research period, students are encouraged to visit the library during their lunch time for additional research and computer time or to exchange books.
Kindergarten and 1st grade students are allowed to keep their books for up to one week. From 2nd grade on, students are allowed to keep them for two weeks. All books can be renewed, and the older grades are allowed to take out several books at a time.
Grades kindergarten through 5th grade focus on acquiring library skills, which provide the foundation for research and study throughout students’ academic careers. Grades 6, 7 and 8 meet in small student groups. During library class, students receive individual help with researching papers and writing bibliographies. Throughout their education, students are taught how to use information properly, which is all the more important in the age of the Internet.
