Saint Dominic Elementary School was the first Catholic elementary school to be established on Long Island. In 1914, Monsignor Charles Canivan arrived at Saint Dominic Parish, where he began his 30-year tenure as pastor. Under Monsignor Canivan’s leadership, ground broke on Saint Dominic Elementary School in 1922. In 1924, sisters from the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scranton, PA, opened the school, registering between 48 to 60 students for each class.
